Upstairs in the Anderson’s attic there is chatter coming from the Christmas, Easter and Halloween boxes. Someone new has arrived. Tallulah the Christmas Fairy wakes to find herself attached to the top of a tree. She soon makes friends and has a magical first Christmas. Once the festivities are over, Tallulah finds herself in the attic with the other decorations from Easter and Halloween. Each year they watch the seasons change as they wait excitedly for their turn to go downstairs. Until one day new boxes appear and then the unthinkable happens. A Fairy Extraordinary Christmas Story is a magical and uplifting tale for the whole family.

This is a story about a Christmas fairy named Tallulah. Tallulah was created by an older couple and sold to a family to be put on top of a Christmas tree. The special thing about Tallulah is that she is alive! Soon she figures out that not only is she alive, but so are all the other Christmas, and other holiday, decorations. She makes new friends and figures out what she is for and what Christmas is all about.

Tallulah is around to be on top of the tree with all her friends for years. She watches the family she has come to know grow up and move on to be with their own families. Until one day when Christmas didn’t seem to come for the decorations. So the decorations took it into their own hands to make the holiday.

This was such a quick and cute Christmas story. I have read a couple other stories by this author and enjoyed both of those as well so I was more than happy to read and review this book when the author asked. If you have children, or like to read children’s books yourself, then I highly recommend checking out A.J’s books.

You may think me biased, being murdered myself. But my state of being has nothing to do with the curiosity toward my own species, if we can be called such. We do not go gentle, as your poet encourages, into that good night.

A dead girl walks the streets.

She hunts murderers. Child killers, much like the man who threw her body down a well three hundred years ago.

And when a strange boy bearing stranger tattoos moves into the neighborhood so, she discovers, does something else. And soon both will be drawn into the world of eerie doll rituals and dark Shinto exorcisms that will take them from American suburbia to the remote valleys and shrines of Aomori, Japan.

Because the boy has a terrifying secret - one that would just kill to get out.

The Girl from the Well is A YA Horror novel pitched as "Dexter" meets "The Grudge", based on a well-loved Japanese ghost story.

I read this book over a year ago, right when my blog pretty much stopped because I had gotten a new job. So this review is strictly going off memory. I entertained myself on my lunch break by reading this book since I didn't really know anyone there. It did a fine job and made my lunch go by way too quickly.

The Girl from the well is told from the POV of Okiku, the ghost of a young girl that was murdered and thrown down a well. She hunts murderers, specifically child killers. She has a special way of killing the men, which are very creepy. Those were definitely my favorite scenes in the book. A little back story, The Ring and The Grudge are two movies that scare the crap out of me. Those dead Japanese girls are just way to creepy. So naturally, since that is what they compared this book too, that is what I was picturing in my head the entire time. If those movies don’t scare you then you probably won’t find this book quite as creepy as I did.

The other main character in the book is Tarquin, a half Japanese tattooed boy. He doesn’t know much about his past but that his mother is dead and she tried to strangle him numerous times when he was little. He also has strange tattoos that he is constantly trying to hide. Okiku is drawn to this boy and she is unsure why. She finds herself becoming attached to him and has an almost need to protect him from the dark shadow that follows him.

Chupeco did a great job incorporating Japanese culture into the story. Her writing style really added to the creepiness of the book also. This was a fantastic debut. I believe this is just going to be a duology, which I enjoy much more than a series. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book, although I’m not sure on the direction that will go (I haven’t read the synopsis yet).

In the end, I highly recommend this book. If you are into this type of story then I believe you will really enjoy this one.

The companion to Raina Telgemeier's #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling and Eisner Award-winning graphic memoir, SMILE.

Raina can't wait to be a big sister. But once Amara is born, things aren't quite how she expected them to be. Amara is cute, but she's also a cranky, grouchy baby, and mostly prefers to play by herself. Their relationship doesn't improve much over the years, but when a baby brother enters the picture and later, something doesn't seem right between their parents, they realize they must figure out how to get along. They are sisters, after all.

Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado.

*This book was provided by NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Sisters is a companion novel to her first memoir Smile. Sisters follows Raina, her mother, sister, and brother on a road trip from San Francisco to Colorado for a family reunion. All Raina wanted was a sister to play with so when her parents tell her that they are having a baby that’s all she can think of. She is a little disappointed when she sees a baby come home that she can’t play with yet. Once her sister Amara is old enough to play she figures out that she is very cranky and prefers to play by herself. This pretty much gets worse over the years.

I feel bad for Raina. Her sister isn’t just cranky, she is just plain mean. Now I have a little sister so I know how they can be and this is just a glimpse into Raina’s childhood but her sister seemed to do stuff all the time just to be mean to Raina. This includes getting a snake all because her sister doesn’t like them, and then accidently letting loose in the van. The road trip to Colorado is the perfect place it insert some flashbacks of Raina’s childhood and to show how their family acts now. Once they get to Colorado Raina realizes how much everyone has changed since the last time she has seen everyone. She feels totally left out. They also realize that something might be wrong with their parents relationship and that really slaps them with reality and they realize that they must figure out how to get along.

I fell in love with Raina’s artwork and story in Smile and I knew I had to get my hands on sisters as soon as I was able. Thankfully I was granted access from NetGalley! Raina has made her way to my auto buy list. I can’t wait to pick up more books by her and I will definitely be on the lookout for the Smile boxset to add to my bookshelves.

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Columbus, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds clearly, someone or something is up to no good.

To unravel the mystery, five young employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift—and they encounter horrors that defy imagination. Along the way, author Grady Hendrix infuses sly social commentary on the nature of work in the new twenty-first century economy.

A traditional haunted house story in a contemporary setting (and full of current fears), Horrorstör comes conveniently packaged in the form of a retail catalog, complete with illustrations of ready-to-assemble furniture and other, more sinister accessories. We promise you’ve never seen anything quite like it!

*This book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Amy transferred to the Cuyahoga from Youngstown when the new store opened. It has only been eleven months but Amy has had enough. She has a younger than her manager, Basil, that she swears has it out for her and she is sure she is going to get fired before her transfer back to her old store gets pushed through. Getting fired would be bad for Amy. She owes her roommates rent money and she refuses to move back to her mom’s trailer. Then Basil gives Amy a deal she can’t refuse. If she stays overnight with him and another coworker, Ruth Anne, he will pay her double overtime and make sure her transfer gets pushed through. All they have to do is a walk of the store every hour to see if they can catch who is vandalizing the store. She agrees, which is probably one of the biggest mistakes she’ll make.

Amy is forced to hear Basil’s speeches all night so her easy escape is to the bathroom where she knows he won’t follow. However, every time she goes in there she notices weird graffiti on the walls and there just keeps appearing more and more. Then on a walk around with Ruth Anne, they discover their coworkers, Matt and Trinity have snuck in to do some paranormal investigations and Trinity is sure she actually found something. Then Trinity decides to hold a séance that goes very wrong.

Amy is a little bit irritating at times and Basil seems like a no it all. He actually makes some decisions that make me want to slap him. Ruth Anne is an interesting character that acts almost like a child sometimes. Trinity needs to take a big old chill pill, especially when you are first introduced to her.  I would say my favorite character might actually be Matt.

Horrorstör is set up to look like a catalog very similar to Ikea. I have never had the pleasure of visiting an Ikea but you could say it is on my bucket list. There is a map of the store at the beginning of the book, along with an ordering form, which is pretty funny.  At the beginning of every chapter there is a picture and description showcasing different products which are mentioned in the book. The further into the book you get the darker the products are. Some of the descriptions are actually pretty funny when you get towards the end of the book.

This book is labeled as an adult horror novel but I wouldn’t put it that far. I would say this actually falls into the New Adult category because Amy is college aged which I often forgot because she sometimes acted like a high-schooler. There are definitely some creepier parts in the book and it definitely falls into the paranormal category but I never found myself actually scared while reading this book.  There was a part in the book that involves a restraining chair and I felt myself getting uncomfortable while reading it because I hate being restrained myself so I could only imagine what that felt like.

Horrorstör wasn’t the best horror novel that I’ve read but I did enjoy the story. I actually enjoyed more than I expected I would and ended up reading it in one sitting. I recommend this book to anyone that thinks it sounds interesting. I especially recommend it to fans (or employees) of Ikea!

Review: Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Finally, the highly anticipated follow-up to the New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster.

Can you love someone too much?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

Walking Disaster is the second book in the Beautiful four book series of companion novels. It is the same story as Beautiful Disaster but is told from Travis’s point of view. I know a lot of people were not fans of Travis and rated the last book poorly because of his anger problems. I went over all of this in my review of the first book; check it out HERE, so I won’t go into too much detail about it. I did however enjoy this book more than the first one.

I will say that even though these are companion books, I do recommend reading Beautiful Disaster first. There are some parts that happen and it’s was nice to know what Abby had been thinking during the scene. There was also a pretty big part that wasn’t in this book! It was briefly mentioned but I thought that was a pretty big flaw and is one of reasons that I knocked a star off. I would have really liked to see what was going through Travis’s mind during something that was actually bad. If you read the first book, then you know that Travis obviously has an anger problem. You see him grow more in this book compared to the first one because you are seeing his thoughts instead of just his reactions.

I was a little confused about the timing of this book. I felt like some parts moved a lot faster than in the previous book and then of course some parts were much slower. I ended up reading this book in two days rather than one like with the first book but I did enjoy it more. I’m don’t think I mentioned this in my review of Beautiful Disaster but Abby was a tad bit annoying. I felt she made some stupid decisions and sometimes it seemed like what Travis would tell her would go in one ear and out another. So I preferred reading about Travis than Abby.

I really enjoy the writing in these books and I ended up reading the novella’s, #1.5 & #2.5. However I don’t think I will be picking up books 3 or 4. The next two books tell the stories of two more of the Maddox brothers and I really don’t care to much about them. I liked the scenes they were in but I don’t feel like a new book is worth reading. I might have a change of heart though.

Make way for Claudette the giant slayer in this delightful, fantastical adventure!

Claudette’s fondest wish is to slay a giant. But her village is so safe and quiet! What’s a future giant slayer to do?

With her best friend Marie (an aspiring princess), and her brother Gaston (a pastry-chef-to-be), Claudette embarks on a super-secret quest to find a giant—without parental permission. Can they find and defeat the giant before their parents find them and drag them back home?

Giants Beware! offers up a wondrous, self-contained world in the tradition of the very best of Pixar. Claudette and her friends will have you laughing out loud from page one.

I picked up this book on recommendation from Misty or at The Book Rat. I heard her talking about how cute she thought it was on her Youtube channel and when I saw it I just knew I had to grab it up. The first thing I will say is that I picked this book up at my library and now I really want a copy to add to my own shelf. It really is such a cute, fun story!

Claudette is a little spit fire that is bound and determined to find the Giant that lives outside of the village where she lives. Her village is surrounded by a wall that is built to protect everyone from a giant that likes to eat babies feet, at least that is the story that everyone is told. Claudette’s father is a dragon slayer that has lost his arm and both legs to a giant dragon and he is sort of the laughing stock of the town. Claudette gets her fire from her father. Claudette’s little brother, Gaston, is an aspiring pastry chef and he is scared of almost everything, completely unlike Claudette and her father.

Claudette ends up tricking her friend Marie, a want to be princess, and her brother and their dog Valiant, into coming on an adventure to find and slay the giant. Which of course sends the village into an uproar. However, when they get out into the wilderness, things aren’t quite what they seem and some surprising things happen.

The artwork in this book is very good. This is a full color book with lots of different size panels and some full page graphics. This is definitely a middle grade graphic novel with a very cartoony drawing style. I really enjoyed reading this story. I highly recommend picking this up if want a really cute, quick read!

There is no one left for Mila to trust. Except for a boy she barely knows.

But Hunter has no idea who—and what—Mila really is. She can’t bear to reveal her secret, even though he’s unwittingly joined her search for Richard Grady, a man who may know more details of Mila’s complicated past.

Yet the road to the truth is more dangerous than ever. With General Holland and the Vita Obscura scouring the earth for her whereabouts, Mila must rely on her newfound android abilities to protect herself and Hunter from imminent harm. Still, embracing her identity as a machine leads her to question the state of her humanity—as well as Hunter’s real motives.

Perfect for fans of I Am Number Four and Divergent, this action-packed and heart-wrenching second installment of MILA 2.0 will leave readers breathlessly awaiting the series conclusion.

*This is a review of the second book and it may contain spoilers.*

You’ll have to excuse this short, sort of vague review, it’s been over a month since I’ve read it and my notes weren’t quite as on par as they usually are. So I’m trying to remember the best that I can.

Renegade starts off two days after Mila made the phone call to Hunter to meet her in Virginia Beach. She hasn’t told him anything about herself or what happened to her mom. He doesn’t question it either. Everything about him is shady and she doesn’t even really know him. At least the author acknowledges that point though. Mila goes in search of the man that her mother told her about at the end of the first book. She tells Hunter that they are in search of her biological father. He completely believes her.

Mila and Hunter are running from Holland’s men and the Vita Obscure, which is a lot closer to Mila than she thinks. There were a few action scenes in this book, one in particular involving Mila 3.0 that I enjoyed. Other than that it wasn’t quite as exciting as the first book. This book focuses more on finding answers to questions from the first book. I say that it did not suffer from “middle books syndrome” like a lot of second books do, even though I think some people would disagree with me. There are some twists and betrayals and lots of Mila’s feelings are explored in this book.

As I did with the first book, I found myself flying through it. The writing flows very nicely and I really enjoy reading these books, even though some of Mila’s decisions are on the dumber side. I never found myself getting bored with the story and I fully plan on continuing on with the next book. As of right now, according to Goodreads, the third book is untitled and has no release date. I hope I don’t have to wait to long for it!

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

I really love this trilogy so far. It has blown way past my expectations. Which is awesome. It has been a while since I have wanted to pick one book up right after the other. The day after I finished reading the first book I went out and bought this one at full price! If you know me, then you know this is not the norm.

For those of you who did not go immediately on to the second book then there is something at the beginning that will be quiet helpful. There is a chart of the Auras and what all the colors are and what they mean. Then at the end of the book, which also happens in the first book, there is a list of all the Dukes and their sons, and what their jobs are.

The book starts off about six months after the last one ended. Anna has turned into a party girl, trying to show the demons that she is working like she is supposed to. Although she always feels bad for the people she persuades to do things. She hasn’t seen or heard from Kaidan since he left with his band to go to LA. Her friends Jay and Veronica have officially become a couple after making up for what happened at the New Year’s Eve party.

The book is broken up into seasons, starting with June the summer before senior year, then continues on to fall, winter, etc. Anna’s father sends her and her friend Kope to different assignments, recruiting people for “the good side”. They travel to many different places. There is a lot of sexual tension going on during their times together and one pretty big shocker. Because of their travels together we are introduced to some new characters. We also get to see Ginger and Marna from the first book again. I really like those girls and the relationship they have as sisters.

Kaidan is mentioned numerous times in the book but doesn’t actually show up until about half way through. This of course made their first encounter so much better. There is a lot of growing done between the two of them in this book.  There is one particular scene between the two of them that I have read more than once. Definitely written perfectly!

If you have read the first book then I highly recommend continuing on with the trilogy. It’s so worth it. I read this book in one day no problem. Can’t wait to buy the third book!

Lucy Tate is on the run. After witnessing the brutal murder of her parents, she's spent five years in hiding -- taking on different personas and faking her way through life. The authorities can't be trusted, so she remains in the shadows, always one beat ahead of the man who is forever hunting her. That is, until she meets Zach Schultz, a senior at Monte Vista High and the one guy she can’t bear to leave. Suddenly her natural instincts to lie, steal, and run are overshadowed by something else...the desire to stay. It’s her one shot at a normal life.

Curious by nature, Zach is immediately drawn to the new girl at school. How can a person look both confident and vulnerable all in the same moment? Determined to learn more about her, he tries to get close, but is thrown into a world of lies and confusion. The only thing that becomes apparent is that discovering the truth may get him killed.

This story follows two different people’s points of view. Zach’s story is in the present day. His dad was left a nice inheritance and they have moved to a ritzy neighborhood in southern CA. He has a tight group of friends and his life is going well.  The other character is Lucy Tate. Her story starts back in 2009 on the worst day of her life and works its way up to the present. This is a story of how their lives intertwine.

I really enjoyed going through time with Lucy’s story even though I sort of  figured out what was happening pretty early on. I really don’t think this story would have been nearly as good if these chapters with Lucy’s perspective weren’t involved. Zach’s story really didn’t do anything for me. I really just read it quickly in order to see what was going to happen next with Lucy. However, I did look forward to the chapters where Zach was doing his investigating was pretty interesting.

Zach’s character was sort of immature at the very start of the book. He seemed to fall very quickly for girls and had a tendency to not choose very well. His friends loved to make fun of him for it too. Lucy had to turn to a life of crime just to make sure she had food in her belly and somewhere to sleep. Because of that she made some pretty dumb decisions but she felt that was what she had to do at the time.

There was the perfect amount of action and romance. It kept me reading nonstop. Before I started reading YA I would only read adult romantic suspense novels so this sounded right up my alley. I am super glad I picked it and I would recommend it to anyone!
