Lucy Tate is on the run. After witnessing the brutal murder of her parents, she's spent five years in hiding -- taking on different personas and faking her way through life. The authorities can't be trusted, so she remains in the shadows, always one beat ahead of the man who is forever hunting her. That is, until she meets Zach Schultz, a senior at Monte Vista High and the one guy she can’t bear to leave. Suddenly her natural instincts to lie, steal, and run are overshadowed by something else...the desire to stay. It’s her one shot at a normal life.

Curious by nature, Zach is immediately drawn to the new girl at school. How can a person look both confident and vulnerable all in the same moment? Determined to learn more about her, he tries to get close, but is thrown into a world of lies and confusion. The only thing that becomes apparent is that discovering the truth may get him killed.

This story follows two different people’s points of view. Zach’s story is in the present day. His dad was left a nice inheritance and they have moved to a ritzy neighborhood in southern CA. He has a tight group of friends and his life is going well.  The other character is Lucy Tate. Her story starts back in 2009 on the worst day of her life and works its way up to the present. This is a story of how their lives intertwine.

I really enjoyed going through time with Lucy’s story even though I sort of  figured out what was happening pretty early on. I really don’t think this story would have been nearly as good if these chapters with Lucy’s perspective weren’t involved. Zach’s story really didn’t do anything for me. I really just read it quickly in order to see what was going to happen next with Lucy. However, I did look forward to the chapters where Zach was doing his investigating was pretty interesting.

Zach’s character was sort of immature at the very start of the book. He seemed to fall very quickly for girls and had a tendency to not choose very well. His friends loved to make fun of him for it too. Lucy had to turn to a life of crime just to make sure she had food in her belly and somewhere to sleep. Because of that she made some pretty dumb decisions but she felt that was what she had to do at the time.

There was the perfect amount of action and romance. It kept me reading nonstop. Before I started reading YA I would only read adult romantic suspense novels so this sounded right up my alley. I am super glad I picked it and I would recommend it to anyone!
