The extraordinary journey that began in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children continues as Jacob Portman and his newfound friends journey to London the peculiar capital of the world. But in this war-torn city, hideous surprises lurk around every corner. Like its predecessor, this second novel in the Peculiar Children series blends thrilling fantasy with never-before-published vintage photography to create a one-of-a-kind reacting experience.

Hollow City begins immediately where the first book left off. All of the characters are in rowboats trying to make their way to the main land with what little items they were able to rescue. They are still being pursued by the Wits in their submarines but they were able to save Miss Peregrine. Miss Peregrine it seems has been damaged and is not able to turn back into her normal self. They need to find another Ymbryne to help her.

They go through many different loops and through a few different time periods trying to figure out where to go. All the while they are being chased down by Hollows and Wits. They are introduced to many new Peculiars, both animal and human. Some try to help them while others brush them off. Jacob and Emma’s relationship is also explored in this book and we get to see Jacob’s abilities grow stronger.

The set of pictures in this book is a recap of all the characters and what their abilities are. I loved this because I didn’t realize how much of the first book I had forgotten. This was extremely helpful. This book, just as the first one, had pictures scattered throughout it describing different people, things, or locations. I know some people didn’t like the pictures but I really enjoy them, especially knowing that they are original pictures that the author found and incorporated into the story. Some of them are a little creepy though.

This book was a lot like the first one, where it was a little slow to start but once it picked up it was really good. I can honestly say I wasn’t getting into this one quite as much though. It was also a tad longer than the first novel. I was torn between a 4 and 5 star for this book. I would say it’s probably a 4.5 but I tend to round up. As of right now I wouldn’t say this is a favorite of the year though. Not sure why I didn’t fall in love with this one like I did the first one. The ending of this book is fantastic though, if anything that is a reason why I pushed it up the 5 star rating. It really makes me want to read the next one and I can’t wait for it to come out!

If you read the first one then I definitely recommend continuing the series. If you haven’t started the series yet then you definitely should! The first novel was what started my love for YA books. I would never be where I am with reading, blogging, and YouTube if I never picked up that book. Sometimes judging a book by its cover can be a good thing.

  1. I actually loved Hollow City even more than I loved Miss Peregrine's. There seemed to be more action in this one and I enjoyed them trying to keep away from the hollows and the wights. I've read where some people don't like the pictures but I love them...Ransom is amazing to be able to interweave them through the story like that!

    1. I think I liked the first one more because it was the first YA novel I had read in years and I fell in love with it. I would agree that there is more action in this one though since they are constantly on the run. I love the pics too. I don't understand the people that think they are stupid. He is definitely an amazing writer and he is on my auto-buy list.
