Mini Monday #20

*I have reformatted what I do on Mini Monday*

Mini Monday: Where I do two “mini” reviews on two children’s books. Each book will get a Thumbs up, Middle Thumb, or Thumbs down rating!

Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds
Illustrated by Peter Brown
Hardcover
, 40 pages
Published August 21st 2012 by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Goodreads|Amazon

The Twilight Zone comes to the carrot patch in this clever picture book parable about a rabbit who fears his favorite treats are out to get him. Jasper Rabbit loves carrots—especially Crackenhopper Field carrots.

He eats them on the way to school.

He eats them going to Little League.

He eats them walking home.

Until the day the carrots start following him...or are they?

Celebrated artist Peter Brown’s stylish illustrations pair perfectly with Aaron Reynold’s text in this hilarious eBook with audio that shows it’s all fun and games…until you get too greedy.

I love the word Crackenhopper. I don’t know why, but I do. This is a cute story that would be nice around Halloween. I like the coloring of the pictures. Everything is black and white except for the carrots which are orange. It makes it stand out and really adds to the “creepiness”. My Five year old said he liked the entire book and my three year old even sat through the whole thing.

The Baby that Roared by Simon Puttock
Illustrated by Nadia Shireen
Hardcover
, 32 pages
Published July 10th 2012 by Nosy Crow (first published April 1st 2012)
Goodreads|Amazon

When Mr. and Mrs. Deer find a little antlered bundle on the doorstep, Mrs. Deer thinks their wish for a baby has come true; Mr. Deer thinks that the baby is very, very peculiar. It won’t stop roaring, so they ask advice from friends and family, who in turn send them off to fetch what they think the baby needs. But each time Mr. and Mrs. Deer return home from an errand, someone is missing and the baby is still roaring. It takes wise old Granny Bear to spot the problem. The baby’s not a baby - it’s a little monster! A very hungry monster at that. . . .

This is a pretty cute book. I like how Mr. Deer always says ”peculiar”. That is another world that I like to say. As with most children’s books, the synopsis gives away almost everything but it is still a pretty good book. There is one full size graphic towards the end of the book that my five year really enjoyed. He said that was his favorite part.

My Rating:

*Both of these books were rented from the library.
